Wow! Really works by just dragging in my files. Excellent!

kevinsanz said...

I drag the files in and nothing happens, this is the file I am putting in "Dawson's Creek - 1x01 -_ Pilot". could the problem be that I am using vista?

the Renamer said...

Kevin - Should work fine on Vista. Was developed on Vista anyway.

Are you using a guest account? Or something with low privileges? I've yet to test fully on Vista's UAC too.

Will check more this weekend.
Did it reaname the sample files provided?

2 reasons I can think of:
1) When the file is in use by another program (currently opened or seeding maybe?)
2) Not write enabled - like a CD

thks for the feedback anyway.

the Renamer said...

Oh also, that episode title is Pilot.
the renamed file is Dawson's Creek.01x01.Pilot

pantherman said...

Very nice application. Is there (or would you be interested in adding) a way to run this from the command line?

the Renamer said...

pantherman - Nope, wouldn't be doing that. The key goal of theRenamer is to make it very user friendly. No scripts or cmd lines to type.

U can already rename multiple files in folders/subfolders, different shows at the same time....no typing to define show names, episode numbers, urls... anything at all.

Anonymous said...

WHY WHOULD YOU WANT TO RUN BY COMMAND LINE!?!! JUST DRAG IN FILES AND IT RENAMES!

pandaking said...

Hi,

Firstly - very impressive program, it works really well.

Small request:
Any chance we could customise the separator being used. Just a box in the settings to set it to what we want would be awesome.

For example, currently you use a "." to sepperate whereas I would like to use a " - ".

I think if you were to include this feature then there would be no reason to use another program, but until this time keep up the good work and I will keep an eye on this project...

the Renamer said...

pandaking - Yup, that would be possible. I'll probably let users choose what they like as their seperator, default is "."

pandaking said...

Well that's fantastic news! :D

I can't wait for you to implement this feature, I am so fed up of having to use other re-namers which are badly written or buggy.

As I am sure you noticed in my last comment, my naming scheme uses 3 characters as a separator:
[space][hyphen][space]
" - "

So if you could make sure it will allow more that one character that would be awesome ;)
Thanks very much, you rock mate!

the Renamer said...

Pandaking - Added your custom separator in Settings. Please update to ver 2.6

pandaking said...

WOW! This is just fantastic, I can't begin to thank you enough. I have just uninstalled 3 other renaming tools.

Only other feature I can think of which would be useful is a right click on file/s to rename option, but I know you liked the idea of keeping this program simple.

I will be telling everyone about this program, you rock dude.

Many thanks again for you hard work,
Panda

PS. You need to get a donations link! ;)

the Renamer said...

Pandaking - Thks for your feedback. Adding that wasn't hard.

One major problem is some Vista users still get an Error msg "User Database File Not Found".

Just confirmed with a friend about it. The installer is fixed, the file exist, but some reason it cannot be found for some Vista users.

On my home PC, it works fine for 2.6
Will need to test it on Vista machines at office on Monday...I pray....

Once this issue is ironed out, I'll promote theRenamer more...the Vista issue is kinda holding me back for now.

the Renamer said...

Not sure why, but the Vista problem is solved from my friend's Vista PC.

Also tested with other Vista PCs, and seems like 2.6's fix is working properly.

pandaking said...

Hi again,

Been using this a lot and the two new separator format fields work great, except for one small bug:

If I set the fields as " - ", I then can rename my files and all works fine. When I then close the program and re-open it, the field has changed to "-" (that is it removes the spaces).
This means every time I start the program, I have to go into the settings and add the spaces.

I hope this is easy to fix, thanks again for all your hard work...

the Renamer said...

pandaking - Your right, and it shouldn't happen this way...will look into it this weekend

pandaking said...

Update works like a charm!
Thanks again, best app ever :P

the Renamer said...

Pandaking - Thanks for your feedbacks. I added the worldwide counter in 2.7 cause I wasn't sure how many people find theRenamer useful (not many people post here)....but as I'm writing this, 14,421 files renamed worldwide!

Makes me really happy to see my renamer doing it's job.

The confirmation thingy is probably useful too. Just do a quick scan and see if the NEW show names match the OLD show names. If it is, the episode titles should be correct.

Enjoy!

Nice thing.
I'm only, but very much, looking for parsing 3 and 4 digit numbers.
e.g.
Show.112.avi
with eSS

and:
Simpsons.1724.avi
with eeSS

looking forward

the Renamer said...

Dedi - It's not really possible to do that without asking the user what is the Show Name, Season No. and Episode No.

Sorry, theRenamers goal is to make it very easy to detect and rename files.

- Alfred

Anonymous said...

i really appreciate your program, and renamed over 1100 files.

But i still got over 100 files with 3 or 4 digit numbers that need to get renamed. Thats about 10% of the files, and i dont think im the only one with such files. I know its not easy to do that, but still it should be possible without asking the User.

Try this: after the Showname is determed (e.g. 4400 to take a problem name), parse the rest of the name for 3/4 digit numbers. This needs some exceptions, since its not uncommon that p720 or i1080 is in the name, so except leading p/i or only parse 3/4 digit numbers which have their numbers separated through a separator in the file name.

There is an other little thing i noticed - duplicate files. They are originally named different, the destination name is of course the same. The renamer says everything renamed ok, but it does nothing since the file already exists. Would not be bad to inform the user about that.

Greets, Dedi

Just doesn't work for me - nothing happens. Tried on a few different files - series' are on IMDB. I am using Vista with limited UAC - program run with admin priv and allowed through the firewall. Only question for me was the file format - my files are in 1x01, 1x02 etc. I would assume that is supported... ?

the Renamer said...

Nothing happens sounds like the flash player is missing or outdated.
Try updating thew player from www.adobe.com

It should run with limited UAC. No need to 'Run As Administrator'

If it still doesn't work, place send me a screenshot of what you see when theRenamer starts.

Anonymous said...

Hi

Ecosse here again. Fraid it isn't Adobe, tried updating Flash just in case. If I try to install the renamer as a

non-admin I get a failure "unable to execute file"

Codeprocess failed code 740. The requested operation requires elevation.

I can install this as an admin but regardless the following two messages appear in the event viewer:

Product: TV Episode Renamer -- Configuration failed.

Windows Installer reconfigured the product. Product Name: TV Episode Renamer. Product Version: 0.5.0. Product

Language: 1033. Reconfiguration success or error status: 1602.

Thre renamer logo swoops in and looks pretty but that is it - it ignores everything I drag in.

Aint got time to troubleshoot this at the moment but could it be something to do with the language code (clutching

at straws with the 1033 message!) I come from the UK.

Anyway, thought I'd let you know.

Cheers
Drew

P.S. "Launch" is spelt wrong on your shortcut

After several minutes the first file a drag into the program changed format to this Criminal minds S0000001E0000006

Also I originaly got a database error hasn't apeared since. But my userdatabase shows as 1 and public as 610 (not sure what that is about)

Anonymous said...

Oh my first freedback didn't apear, I will try again.

I am running Vista Home Premium, when i first run the program it loaded with an error about the database, and the program had no text about drag and drop, I restarted it again and same thing, no splash screen, I shut it down and then Vista asked to run it as Admin, I did that now the splash screen apears.

So I drag a file to the splash screen and nothing happens, but after several minutes of waiting it renamed the first test file to Criminal minds S0000001E0000006

Program looks good, but for me isn't doing anything.

Also where is the world wide results ? is it something only you see, be good to add failed attempts to it, maybe see how many people are having problems too.

the Renamer said...

Hi anonymous -

Not sure why it is happening to you, there isn't a need to "Run As Admin". You shouldn't need to wait several mins too. Criminal minds S0000001E0000006 is also not what it's intended to do.

All I can say is it's not working the way it should. Just make sure you are running version 2.8 (database/vista error fixed)

The first time you run theRenamer, there are no statistics shown on the splash screen. Only after the first file is renamed, it shows the Number of files renamed worldwide and you're own stats.

As for failed attempts, well, if there are failed attempts, it probably means there's a problem running theRenamer on you're machine, which most likely won't be able to send me the failed attempt numbers too.

There are a few situations whereby theRenamer cannot rename the file:

http://therenamer.com/error_descriptions.html

All I can say is thanks for you're feedback, I'm also running Vista Home Premium and have tested it on an Administrator and Guest account. Also tested on a few XP/Vista PCs.

As of now, theRenamer has renamed 51,993 files worldwide. Myself has renamed 1122. It has to be working for allot of people.

If I ever come across you're problem, I will definitely look into it, but if I cannot reproduce you're problem, there isn't much I can do.

I leave you with this notes:
Requirements:
1) Latest Adobe Flash Player installed.
2) Latest version of theRenamer.

Thanks,
Alfred

Great osftware, and you really rock in interface design !!

Just one thing : 3 digit episode parsing.

Exemple : 3x01 is detected but 301 is not... It may be possible to parse also these dubious filename..

Thank you very much

the Renamer said...

ericvivi -
I don't pass 3digits now because 123 can be confused as season 12 episode 3 or season 1 episode 23....

I'll have to think of an elegant way that does not ask user too much questions. Hopefully none cause that's how i want theRenamer to be, easy to use.

Any suggestions?

Anonymous said...

My previous attempts getting this program to work on the day I installed it failed, its now the next day and it is working, I didn't do anything different, but rebooted.

As for the files with episode numbers 101 102 103 etc. How about asking the user if it is season 1 or season 10, I have so many in my collection using a 3 number format. But I seperate all my episodes in to seperate folders for each season.

So another spin on this drag and drop, a folder drag and drop, the season number can be obtained from the folder name.

Also I have some episodes that are part 1 and 2 (some part 1 to 3) that are a single file, so a name might look like : videoname - s01e01 - episode 1 and 2, or videoname - s01e01x02 - episode
This program renames those to the first occurance found, I then have to rename it myself, can I deselect from the drag and drop or must I just not drag it into the program.

Next thing is series with numbers in the name, like the 4400, or Babylon 5, Or Deep Space 9, is there any plan on how to handle those names ?

Having fun renaming my collection now, but stuck on so many. I guess I added a few hundred to your global tally so far.

Anonymous said...

This application is amazing and has saved me no end of time. One request though, would you be able to add an option to change the numbering fromat to lowercase. So instead of "S01E01" be able to chose "s01e01"?

Once again, and excellent app..

Ryan Carter said...

Excellent Application

Have you considered porting this to OSX?

the Renamer said...

John - lowercase is possible. Wait for next update.

huttonhenrysfinest - Not possible with OSX, but someday I's like to pick up Adobe Air, then it will work on Win/Mac....but then, I don't have a Mac to test on :(

Thanks you both for the kind feedbacks.

I'm using it allot too. It's reaching 90,000 renamed worldwide soon! Yeah!!

I'm glad I'm not the only person who likes to keep his video collection nice and tidy.

There are some quirks I'd need to iron out..here's what I can think of now:

1) User to maintain their own list of shows names that they prefer, instead of pulling the name from IMDB. Useful when long names like example: Star Trek The Next Generation to be force to STTNG, or an Anime in Japanese to be force to a US name.

2) User to maintain their own database. Not so fun maintaining Public Database nowadays.. about 100 ttcodes to verify manually every weekend before adding them to the Public Database.

- Alfred

if you ever need a tester for OSX drop me a mail.

Wonderful tools. Too small requests though. The first one would be to make it work with episode naming like this: dexter3.3.divx.avi
at this time it doesnæt recognise it. Also, I would like to have it able to run in the background once a day, to rename any episodes that has been added. Also, fo this feature, I'd love for it to not check and re-rename files that have already been renamed before. it is a waste of bandwith, time and resources.

the Renamer said...

runar - I'm still trying to think of a way to scan numbers as seasons/episodes...

I've thought of "watch folder" before....but files that are seeding or in the queue list cannot be renamed. As long as it's in use by another program, Windows will not allow files to be renamed.

Hi, awesome program, just wondered if you have thought about using thetvdb.com, or have it as an option?

Its just that for something like Bones S04E08, IMDB has it listed as "The Con Man in the Meth Lab" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460627/episodes#season-4), while thetvdb.com has it listed as "The Skull in the Sculpture" (http://www.thetvdb.com/?tab=season&seriesid=75682&seasonid=33597&lid=7).

I think in this case, it is because IMDB lists the 2 hour season opener as 1 episode, while thetvdb.com has it listed as 2 seperate episodes (which I guess is the more correct way, in terms of the releases).

Also, would it be possible to be able to 'uncheck' dragged & dropped files from being renamed, instead of renaming them all, or having to cancel and re-drag? Just in case it does show up with an incorrect title or something.

One more, any chance of a 'move to folder' function, where you can specify a parent folder in the options, and then the program would work out the Show Name folder, Season folder, then place the episode in that folder? You could have a Rename button, and a Rename & move button. Something like give it D:\TV_Sorted, then under that folder it would automatically go (or create) Bones\Season 04\Bones - S04E08... for example?

Maybe this is going away from your simplicity paradigm, but those features would make it complete for me, but I don't know what you have in mind/time.

Anonymous said...

Awesome program, much more convenient than tvrenamer!

Anonymous said...

Wow finally a really useful tool for renaming TV file! keep up the great work :)

kevinsanz said...

hey how about scraping for tv info for thetvdb instead of IMDB? or maybe using one as a backup when the filenames are missing.

BTW this is the same Kevin that posted way back in "June 26, 2008 9:16 PM" Just scroll up and you will see the post, ;)

Anonymous said...

Wow! great app. Very much appreciated over here. Thank you!

the Renamer said...

Anonymous - Thanks for the feedback :)

I'm working on an update with with some minor fixes.

The big changes for ver 2.9 are:

1) Doing away with Public database.

2) A way to force show names (eg, from a long name like "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" to anything you prefer, like "TSCC"

Unknown said...

Hello from Italy !!

Wonderful program!! You are great!!

Only a thing, it would be great if there will be the possibility to use the "thetvdb.com" archive, because there are also shows names in other languages, like italian.
In fact, also in your samples, you use many shows with italian names, and it would be beautiful to keep tv shows name, or to download from thetvdb.com the title in the language that you select.

A mediaplayer program, YAMJ can do that, but doesn't change names, only download plots from thetvdb.com in the language you select.

Sorry for my bad english. I hope you can do also this thing, and no other program is like this !!

Thanks
Carlo

the Renamer said...

Tankalf - Thanks for the comments.

I've checked through TVDB, but can't find any language settings...I only see English.

Anyway, I've looked through IMDB, epguides and TVDB before deciding on using IMDB. It has the largest database, from very old shows to present.

I'm not keen on making theRenamer check different websites because it'll be hard to maintain when new features are added..or bugs to fix...I'll have to fix for different websites.

I do have a new feature for next version. Users can specify what show name they prefer to call it.
So you can use this to change from an English showname to Italian.
It won't work for show titles though...just show names.

Thomas said...

This is really a great program! However, I think you should try to make it so that you can specify certain directories to check regularly and automatically rename files..

the Renamer said...

Thomas - You're not the first to suggest that. I'll do something about it.

theRenamer can't rename files in a watch folder when it's in use.
Situations when the file is still seeding, or when it's opened.

Anonymous said...

Love the program, one thing I can't find anywhere and your program looks like the perfect vessel, is to take a file that has show-name and episode-name and have your program populate it with the proper SxxExx in the file name based on having a correct episode-name. Basically the reverse of what it does now.

I use Beyond TV and it does not put episode or season in the name anywhere, and when I convert them for use on a portable video device it is impossible to tell what show to watch first.

Thanks for the great program

Anonymous said...

Hi,

Bones episodes are incorrect on IMDB - Yanks in the UK was episode 1 & 2.

How to fix?

Also - Fetch tool only grabs one directory, not sub directories in that directory. Can you fix?

Thanks

the Renamer said...

Anonymous -
Hi there, I'm not sure of Bones titles. The rest seems to be correct. You can write to IMDB and inform them about this. If it is wrong, I'm sure they will fix it.

Fetch folder does not grab sub directories. I'll see if I can add it in next version.

BTW - when u manually drag a folder, it grabs all files, including sub folders.
You can also drag multiple folders.

Anonymous said...

Please, set a checkbox at Fetch Folder - Scan sub-folders. Not everytime i want to scan the sub-folders.
Thanks

Unknown said...

Hi Mate, loving your program! one thing i would like to see if possible would be the option to number like 1x01 aswell as 01x01?

Thanks again

the Renamer said...

Bob - Yes, will have a choice to include zeros in front.

the Renamer said...

Anonymous - I can, but the thing is you should scan sub folders too.

Because there might be some torrents that come together in a folder.
If you don't scan sub folders, you might miss them.

And you will have to go to settings to turn on/off when needed.

I'd recommend in your bittorrent client, set your download completed folder to a place whereby your video collection won't be in the sub folder of the "download completed" folder.

Anonymous said...

I know you don't want to do command line, but can you just add a simple command line switch like /paw that will automatically process the fetch folder? It would be nice to just run it automatically every night after I download my shows.

Thanks

JJ

the Renamer said...

JJ - Have to think about parameter switch.

I'd like to move on and make a better website.

The "just numbers" are quite done!
I can scan for showname.112.avi files now.

Just finished last night :)
Gonna regret it when I get to work.

Unknown said...

Hi, one thing i have a little problem with is when a show is not on IMDB. for example ross kemp in afgahnistan...

when the renamer runs and sees this program it renames all the episodes to Airwolf :) funny but a tad annoying :)

could you include a way to exclude certains folders from being renamed? as i like to everynow and then rename all my videofiles but would like to skip folder like ross kemp.

Thanks again
Bob

the Renamer said...

Bob -

You're right, ross kemp went to Airwolf for some reason.

wierd.

But I think theRenamer is really smart at guessing the show name right now, won't make any changes to it.

I don't think I'll add a list for exclude folders. Adding that will mean checking every file dragged and see if it's in a "exclude folder" list.

Normally, people will just use theRenamer to rename any new show they have collected.

If you like to rename files over and over again, u can select multiple folders to drag, but de-select the folders you do not want to rename.

Or separate into 2 folders. those u like to rename again, and those you want to exclude.

Anonymous said...

After the Renamer check for an update and finds one, can I just keep using it without updating? It seems to be stuck there, not letting me rename anything. Let's say I do not need the new feature.

Anonymous said...

And one more thing: if you are going to change a feature, where you drop the 0 from S01, leave it ENABLED by default, so that I don't end up with a bunch of files not named like the rest of my content, and have to go and rename them twice.

the Renamer said...

flatlinebb - I made it such that whenever there's a new version, you are forced to update it. Yes, it stops at the update notice screen, everything else is disabled.

This is to make sure everyone is using the latest.

But frankly, I want to control my software. theRenamer is now freeware, and donations are accepted.
In future if I want to start charging for this, people will not be able to use the older versions.

Right now, it's still freeware, and hopefully with everybody's kind donations, I do not need to resort to a charging fee.

So please donate :)

Secondly,
The "include/exclude 0 for season" is a new feature. I needed to set a default choice.

I should have Enabled it by default...sorry about that.

You can always Enable it anytime from the settings.

I've just changed the default to be Enabled for the installed.

- Alfred

Unknown said...

Hi renamer, the way my setup is as follows.

i have a folder called TV_shows and under that have all my shows such as ross kemp, lost, fringe etc... my media app maps to this folder TV_shows and updates when new shows are added. I use another app that auto downloads the latest episodes for me so every now and again i like to run therenamer through the whole folder so that i dont miss any shows.

It is a pain that the ross kemp if afghanastan is renamed to airwolf everytime. Is there no way to add an exclusion in the database? its a right pain in the **** for me and im sure there will be other shows in the future this will happen with.

if not then ill have to live with it, thanks again.

Bob

the Renamer said...

Bob - There isn't a way to exclude folders, but there is a work around for you.

What you want is to ignore renaming "ross kemp in afghanastan".S1E01.avi files right?

You can add in the Database table like this:
Showname: ross kemp in afghanastan
TTcode: 123 (or anything else but empty line like "skip")

This tells theRenamer for every show called "ross kemp in afghanastan", use ttcode 123 in IMDB.

Obviously there will be an error like "!!! EPISODE TITLE MISSING !!!", which will skipp that file.

Hope it helps.

BTW, "ross kemp in afghanastan" is really a tvshow? what file name did you drag in?

- Alfred

Unknown said...

Thanks for that - ill give it ago.

Yeah its wierd because i use "ross kemp in afghanastan" but if you go to imdb.com it doesnt exist for some reason.....?

Anyway for some reason all my shows are saying !!Episode Title Unkwown!! at the moment. Is there something wrong fetching from imdb?

the Renamer said...

Bob - Do you mean all of "ross kemp in afghanistan" shows are saysing "!!!Episode Title Unknown!!!"?

or every show you drag in is saying that?

If it's just "ross kemp in afghanistan" show, it's correct, since it's not listed in IMDB.

If it's every file you drag in saying that, then there's a problem.

You can send me the log and I'll see what has happened.

Do this:
1) Run theRenamer (starts a fresh new log)
2) Drag the shows that gave you all the errors.
3) When it's done, it will stop at a "New" and "Show Log" screen. Click on "Show Log".
4) Copy the contents and e-mail it to me. alfred(at)therenamer.com

With the log, I can find out what happened.

- Alf

Unknown said...

turns out that it didnt like episodes like

Fringe - 01x03 - Title.mkv

if i renamed to

Fringe - 1x03 - Title.mkv

it worked fine, btw the ross kemp thing is now ignored, cheers

the Renamer said...

Bob - You found a bug! the "- " followed by numbers made it think it's a numbering format. It should have been a "x" format.

I'll get on it. For now, remove the "- " manually.

Glad the ross kemp thing works for you.
I'll add a "Skip" renaming feature next. It will still be skipping by file names, not folder names.
Right now, it's still searching IMDB for that TTcode which does not exist anyway.

Flatline said...

Could you include a checkbox or something during the setup not to install the sample files? I keep deleting them and they keep being reinstalled.
And also, a warning during setup, that if you modified your usershows or usercodes, you should not let the program overwrite them during setup.
Thank you.

the Renamer said...

Flatline - Sure, I didn't realize that about the sample files. I'll do a checkbox next.

As for overwriting the usershows and usercodes, there is confirmation to overwrite it or not. Installer should ask you.

Let me know if it doesn't work on your PC.

Unknown said...

Hi, thanks for the update. unfortunetly the bug still seems to be there...

When i title :- Torchwood - 1x01 - Everything Changes.mkv it works fine but when i change to

Torchwood - 01x01 - Everything Changes.mkv

it seems the program doesnt like the 01x01 and only likes 1x01.

Cheers

Unknown said...

Not sure if you are looking to add any new features to the app but one i think would be quite usefull is after the rename is complete an option to show the files that were skipped?

the Renamer said...

Bob - The Confirm list shows the ones that have problem.

Not enough?

Unknown said...

What i mean was after the rename takes place it would be nice to show them all together.

Currently the confirm lists everything including the exceptions but it would be good after the scan is complete to see the errors in a smaller section. Sometimes cralling through 4-5 hundread eps can take a while :)

Anonymous said...

Thank you for including additional warning during install about the files being overwritten. I think it makes you pay more attention during upgrades :)

the Renamer said...

Bob - You can do that now.
In the Confirmation table, click the "New" column. It will sort in Alphabetical order.

All skipped files are call "!!! something !!!" They will end up at the bottom. Click again and they will be sorted on top.

Dude, you have allot of files to rename :)

Unknown said...

lol, yeah i know! thats why your program works great!
